feelin' kinda done [Jul. 4th, 2008|04:26 pm]
i feel kind of done with lunar. i don't have much interest in picking it up again. i'm sure that it'll improve by the end, as things pick up, but improve enough? not so sure on that front.

so that leaves me wondering what i should be playing, if anything. random thoughts on classic games:

- phantasy star II
- phantasy star ~the end of the millenium~
- ys iv: the dawn of ys
- magic knight rayearth (saturn)

thoughts on non-classic games:

- persona 3: fes
- ninja gaiden II
- project gotham racing 3 or 4 (i have both)
- nights: journey dreams whatever
- zelda: twilight princess

actually, i think i'll throw in nights and see what i think.

all i want is tales [Jul. 4th, 2008|05:45 pm]
nights is really charming -- they managed to retain the gameplay and aesthetic (and music!) style of the saturn game, totally.

of course, the oft-mentioned unskippable cutscenes are pretty dreadful. they're actually more half dreadful/half kiddier than kiddie, which just makes them rather tedious.

i had a good enough time playing it but i didn't get sucked in. on the other hand, i wanna kinda go back to it immediately. it's nice.

but what i really find myself wanting to play is the new tales of symphonia game for wii. it doesn't come out here till much later this year, unfortunately. so that's not an option at present.

in fact, vesperia comes out first. did the vesperia demo hit the damn US xbox 360 store yet?

notebooks [Jul. 4th, 2008|05:57 pm]
anybody out there want any notebooks -- anybody local?

i have a stack of unused notebooks. i used to hoard them because i was always taking notes on paper when covering games, but i don't cover games anymore and i rarely take notes on paper. consequently i have a good pile of notebooks to get rid of.. actually, here's a visual aid:

of course, they're all promotional: brooktown senior year (lol), turok, fracture and LOTR online.

so yeah, local people -- want a notebbok?

tales of vesperia demo [Jul. 4th, 2008|07:19 pm]
so i finally got around to making a japanese 360 account so i could download the tales of vesperia demo. the boss killed me. =\

i was surprised by how semi-stilted and last-gen the game feels. i mean, i'm still excited, but the whole "pausing animations between lines of dialogue" and general feel of the game's animations just doesn't live up to the visual style at all. i'm sure i'll get used to it very quickly, but i do feel like it hasn't evolved much as a game, at least based on this very limited information. the localization seems to be on par with what we've come to expect from 8-4 text translation (good) and namco tales dubbing (solid if unremarkable.)

dunno. i'm still into it. demos are rarely good to judge games by, and given all of the screenshots, my knowledge of the series, and what-have-you, this was exactly what i was expecting, minus the faint sense of "hrmm" re: the last-genniness of the whole thing.

i also downloaded the gundam: operation troy multiplayer demo and played a couple of rounds and then deleted it. there were a couple of japanese guys actually using headsets. i realized i would rather discuss gundam with japanese people than play some stupid FPS, but i didn't make an attempt because they (obviously) wanted to play some stupid FPS. the next game i joined had americans in it and they were babbling about spawn camping etc so i just quit.

whee.

it's amazing how much time you have to waste to wring entertainment out of games. other media, we don't really expect to have to do that. especially with tivo, where i skip not just commercials but also the boring / irrelevant bits of TV shows (opening/closing credits, recaps, etc.) and watch an hour-long show in like 35 minutes or whatever.
