church
i went to chuch with my parents tonight. i can't remember the last time i went. i've never even been to this one.

i found it interesting, and i found it it very interesting how they phrased things when it came to communion. it was something along the lines of "anyone who believes jesus christ is present in the bread and the wine is invited take communion." consequently i wasn't going to. but, my mom wanted me to. i think it was maybe her ulterior motive. so i ended up doing so.

i don't have anything, really, to report. i don't debate religion as a hobby anymore, either. but it was an occurrence that bears mention, i think.

We're going in a half-hour. This is at a different (Catholic) church than the one I went to growing up, near my parents' new home. I went last year too, which was memorable because half-way through the mass dancers filed down the aisles and for the next ten minutes made everyone kind of embarrassed for them.

In the car yesterday I told my mom something like, "Just so you don't expect me to get Communion..."

She replied, "Aww, Ben, but why wouldn't you if you're right there?"

"Because, um, I don't believe in the religion and I don't want to take part in its sacrements?" I wish I had come up with some appropriately outlandish metaphor which would have illustrated just how wrong / silly / ridiculous her suggestion was. Something about visiting a mosque and praising Allah, maybe. HEY IF YOU'RE THERE YOU MIGHT AS WELL RIGHT??

The discussion soon moved on to Hillary Clinton's love of partial-birth abortions.

that's funny. why not partake of a holy sacrament? it's the thing to do!

i was on the money. my mom later made a couple of comments that confirmed that she wanted me to take communion.

anyway, she thanked me, so i'm not irritated in any way. it's more important to me for my mom to be happy than for me to not lie at church. that's why i didn't want to take it; not because i actually care, but because i don't like to lie and they did a good job of phrasing the requirement.

I'm skipping. My parents, brother, and cousin are going to midnight mass. I purposely only brought jeans and khakis so I had an excuse not to go (not that I needed one, they're just letting me stay).

When I was an altar boy, my friends and I used to snack on the unblessed bread and wine before mass. Good times.

Somehow reading that reminded me of the time I got a stale communion wafer during a school mass and remarked about it to a classmate next to me. A day later I was summoned to the principal's office and chewed out because somebody had overheard me and IT CAN'T BE STALE, IT'S THE BODY OF JESUS CHRIST! JESUS CANNOT POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THE CUPBOARD FOR TOO LONG!

...And that's why I can't accept the doctrine of transubstantiation.

my mom actually gave me a sweater she got me early, because i complained i didn't have anything nice-ish to wear to church that matched my pants. i wasn't trying to get out of it, though. i just decided to go along, for the same reason i took communion: it makes her happy. in a genuine way, not placating her.

Yeah, my parents pretty much expected me not to go. I ended up having a lot of fun at home with my brother and two of his friends. 4 guys + 2 acoustic guitars + 1 cello + 1 piano = a helluva long Beatles/John Lennon medley.

I find the whole idea of Communion/Eucharist to be creepy. I mean, if you really believe in it, then isn't it basically cannibalism?
