POSSESSED from Martin Hampton on Vimeo.

21 minute short film on hoarders.

makes me feel both more and less fucked up about the eva game post below. whee!

my mom is a crazy-ass packrat. not up to these standards, of course. but she definitely keeps tons of stuff. watching this video makes me want to get RID OF tons of stuff. just -- anything.

related: i'm pondering getting rid of my dreamcast collection.

Watching that guy with the 6,000 books made me squirm a little. I've got a whole shitload of doujin I've amassed from numerous Comiket trips, and I love so much of it, but holy god is there a LOT of it.

I've mostly culled my Saturn collection down to stuff I really, truly love. I think I'm going to do the same for DC, and probably dump the majority of my PC and 16-bit stuff save for a few really special things. Really, is there any good reason to hold onto those things, with re-release compilations, emulation, and VC/XBLA/PSN so prominent? Unless you're a paranoid "WE NEED A PHYSICAL COPY OF EVERYTHING BECAUSE I DON'T TRUST THE DOWNLOAD ILLUMINATI" type.

meh, i think not trusting the download services is a good plan in the long run. they've made no promises. emulation more obviates the need for 16 bit stuff than XBLA/VC does.

i took a look at my DC collection after posting this, and realized, it doesn't take much space up. but on the other hand, i'm not sure i'll ever play it again. it puts me in a state of paralysis.

I have a lot in common with the book guy seeing as my game library is in the 2,000 ball park, but I enjoy my collection and can sympathize with him (I'm curious if he actually reads his books...I don't know if he ever says). I like being able to say, "I feel like playing X" and having a legit copy of the game. I like having people over that thumb through my collection and discuss shit with me about it. I like digging through games that I haven't played before and finding something new. I dunno, I mean...it's not "normal", but I don't consider it unhealthy either.

In a weird coici-dink, I told Cathy today that I needed to go into the garage, go through my arcade collection and start ax'ing projects I don't care about any more. I think that is where my collecting became a tad ridiculous space wise. Just no room for these big ass chunks of wood.

Ha! We talked about hoarders last night.

Wish you could have been here (not because I think you have a problem).

wow.

yeah, i did manage to shake toys pretty easily. i was never a big collector, and when i had to move toys i realized i was just moving boxes full of plastic trash. games, though, i have to watch myself.

Ohh, thanks for reminding me that I need to update my game collection database.

:(

Everytime I think about how I want to trim down a little here or there, I realize I'm way too lazy to deal with eBay as a means to sell and I'm pretty unwilling to take it in the ass trying to move stuff locally. Catch 22!

I think I'll just wind up donating a bunch of stuff. DVDs to the local library and maybe reclaim the storage space for my games for the time being.

Some stuff I can justify keeping around (never hurts to have backup PS1s, Dreamcasts or Saturns) while other stuff is more questionable (why the fuck do I have two broken SegaCDs still?) and yet other stuff really should get kicked to the curb (I doubt I'll ever plug my Supergrafx in ever again).

Maybe I'll do something about it this weekend. You know, when I'm not replaying a 13 year old adventure game or finally getting around to playing a 4 year old Xbox title. Man, I really do want to capture some nice videos of those bonus levels in Saturn Quake, too. Should I play through Crusader of Centy? It looks fun. Everyone says the stealth sections of Call of Juarez suck, but I just got a cheap PC copy in and I'd love to finally give it a run through to see how it compares to Gun. When's Overseer hit GOG? Not soon enough, that's for sure. Two more Call of Duty games to play through before Modern Warfare 2 comes out. Why can't I find the time to play through Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory?

FUCK.

you know, you could always post up a list of shit you don't want anymore on lj. i'm sure you have enough people following you that you could sell off some of it. you'd still have to ship it, but that's pretty easy.

Shipping is actually the hard part for me because of my work schedule / post office hours. There's a post office about 30 minutes away that has one of those 24 hour mailer things that I could use (and used to use when I lived nearby it), but damn is that an inconvenience.

I'm going to have to start taking some vacation time each month just to move stuff.
